Khotan rugs, also known as Samrakand in the past, originate in the ancient city of Khotan (Hotan) in the southern districts of Xinjiang or East Turkistan. These beautifully hand woven rugs combine the illustrative Central Asian designs with western oriental designs colourings. The techniques used in producing such decorative rugs has been influenced to some degrees by the earlier Persian rugs, however, the designs usually consist of lattice designs and bearing clusters of rosettes.
Khotan designs have been used to produce woollen rugs with triple medallion colour schemes in blue on red with pomegranate vines illustrating the symbols of fertility in the eastern cultures and Buddhism. The borders of the Khotan rugs are influenced by Chinese fret patterns and/or flowering vines.
