The word Suzani in Persian language (Farsi) means needle which is used to describe needlework or embroidery. Uzbekistan in central Asia located in the heart of the silk road was the centre of making Suzanis, generally produced by girls when becoming of age to get married to be added to their endowments. Its handcrafting included the use of silk with vibrant colours, and its designs were inspired and influenced by various cultures alongside the silk road, such as the Chinese, Ottoman and Persian empires. As an example, the Tulip design which is considered to be the perfect shape within the Turkish culture or the flowers taken from the famous Persian gardens. They were much desired and admired by travellers, including Europeans and are to this day considered a work of art. Today after the Soviet era ended, the production of Suzanis resumed to small numbers but in the same manner as hundreds of years ago using colourful silks on cotton or silk plane fabrics. The Story Behind the Persian Carpet

The Persian carpet is an essential part of Persian art and culture. Carpet-weaving is undoubtedly one of the most distinguished manifestations of Persian culture and art. Iran is also the world's largest producer and exporter of handmade carpets, producing three quarters of the world's total output. The art of carpet weaving existed in Iran in ancient times, according to evidence such as the 2500-year-old Pazyryk carpet, dating back to 500 B.C., during the Achaemenid period. Wool is the most common material for carpets but cotton is frequently used for the foundation of city and workshop carpets. There is a wide variety in types of wool used for weaving.
