The name Polonaise meaning from Poland was a name given to certain carpets sourced from Poland and were publicly exhibited in the 19th. Century . it was assumed that the carpets were made in Poland since they were found in the Palace of one of the Kings in Poland. The rugs were made in a combination of wool, silk and metal threads of gold and silver, later discovered that they were actually woven in Isfahan, Persia ( todayӳ Iran) in the early Safavid era in the 16Th. Century They were often presented as precious gifts of the royal court of Persia at the time and most probably by the king Shah Abbas the great ( 1571 ֠1629) to the European rulers and religious dignitaries. some of these carpets have even the Polish coat of arms and were most possibly ordered by the Polish king of the time, Few good samples can be found in Tehran carpet museum ,Gulbankian in Lisbon, Portugal and Los Angeles County Museum and others around the world. I had the pleasure of seeing a few in Tehran Museum which holds a good collection where they are kept and preserved well. Since silk is more fragile than wool one could clearly notice deterioration of silk in such rugs next to the wool and precious metal where it now gives the embossed impression and effect when looking and touching the rugs. They are certainly one of the most distinguished and precious work of arts.

The Story Behind the Persian Carpet

The Persian carpet is an essential part of Persian art and culture. Carpet-weaving is undoubtedly one of the most distinguished manifestations of Persian culture and art. Iran is also the world's largest producer and exporter of handmade carpets, producing three quarters of the world's total output. The art of carpet weaving existed in Iran in ancient times, according to evidence such as the 2500-year-old Pazyryk carpet, dating back to 500 B.C., during the Achaemenid period. Wool is the most common material for carpets but cotton is frequently used for the foundation of city and workshop carpets. There is a wide variety in types of wool used for weaving.
