Persian Mashad Runner Rug - Beige and Light Red Borders

Mashad, is one of the largest cities of Iran where the shrine of the 9th saint of Shia, Imam Reza’s is located and is considered an important holy city. Khorasan region in North East of Iran where Mashad is the capital has gone through many turbulent times in the past, the most known is the invasion of Mongols such as Genghis Khan and Timur Lang. The carpet manufacturing is extensive and mostly in larger sizes, typically with medallions or an all over design in red background colour and a few in beige, using cotton as foundation in both warp and weft in soft silky wool, generally dyed locally in a dark shade of ruby red. The weave is quite special and is called Jofti knots which are different from other well-known knots such as Persian or Turkish. Some of the rugs are made in much finer quality than others and bear the signature of master weaver such as Ghazi, Makhmalbaf, Amoghli, Saber etc. where they use silk on the edge or in foundation. These extremely fine rugs were often purchased by the Persian Royal and aristocratic families to furnish the palaces and large mansions.
