The city of Shiraz situated in southern central Iran is famous for its nomadic and artistic rugs woven mainly by the nomads called kashgai or Qashgai whom now either have settled in the surrounding areas or as a small group still migrate twice a year some 900 km between the cool highland in the north of Shiraz and the warm plateau in the southern part of Iran, moving their flocks of sheep, horses and other animals to a well designated areas. Rug making using wool both for the pile and foundation (warp & weft) which is obtained and is spooned from their own sheep or bought locally in the small bazar has always been part of their daily life. There is no set design or graph paper and designs are passed on from mother to daughter or taken from beautiful historical landscape when migrating such as the ruins of Persepolis, tree of life, medallion design often with small birds or animals. Each tribe has kept their own characteristic design even when settled such as kashkouli, Nafar, etc. Which are among the ones who make the finest tribal rugs among the nomads .

The Story Behind the Persian Carpet

The Persian carpet is an essential part of Persian art and culture. Carpet-weaving is undoubtedly one of the most distinguished manifestations of Persian culture and art. Iran is also the world's largest producer and exporter of handmade carpets, producing three quarters of the world's total output. The art of carpet weaving existed in Iran in ancient times, according to evidence such as the 2500-year-old Pazyryk carpet, dating back to 500 B.C., during the Achaemenid period. Wool is the most common material for carpets but cotton is frequently used for the foundation of city and workshop carpets. There is a wide variety in types of wool used for weaving.
